The end of the year is here and I’m sure most of you have set your goals for 2009 or you are in the process of doing so. So let’s talk a bit about actively pursuing your goals to give you a head start into the New Year.
Our goals are like a road map, they tell us where we are going and how to get there. But most importantly, you must understand why you are working towards that goal. What motivates you??
You don’t just head out to Mississippi with no idea why you are going there. Even if it’s just because you want to get away and see something new, you still know why you decided to get in your car and drive. You must understand this for professional goals as well, because the WHY is what drives you when times get tough. You need a reason to push onward, something to look forward to, and something to keep your eye on.
Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. You must MAKE your own opportunities. You are not lacking anything. You do not need better resources, or more intelligence or more opportunities. Take what you have and make it into what you want!
Goals give you direction and provide guidance. You will reach toward the next rung only if that is your goal. Achievement will not come without setting and then actively pursuing your goals. Hitting our goals is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choices we make every day.
Once you have a goal and you keep your focus on it, it will lead you there just like the road map. Just follow the path you set out for yourself, and when roadblocks arise, find an alternative route. You don’t turn around and go home just because there is a detour. There is always another option if you have an open mind.
So stay on track and keep heading that way, heading towards the accomplishment of your goals and heading towards success.
I hope 2008 has been a very prosperous year for all of you and I wish you all the best in 2009! Happy Holidays everyone!
